The Art

Chef Andrew Carmellini of San Morello, and Detroit artist Desiree Kelly created an “Art-to-Table” culinary experience inspired by Desiree Kelly’s artwork titled “The OGs: Grandma and Auntie”.  The Art-to-Table Menu was available during the Salon in the San Morello dining room, and online for takeout/delivery. A portion of proceeds supported Detroit Public Schools  Community District Fine Arts Programs during COVID-19.

Artist, Desiree Kelly…

is an award winning artist and a native to Detroit. The former Production Manager/Senior Graphic Designer for The Detroit Metro Times weekly is now known for her work as Detroit’s premiere Portrait painter. She was introduced to oil painting while studying Graphic Design at Wayne State University. Raised on the Eastside, she became inspired by the environment and developed a style of storytelling through portraits. Her portraits of public icons are historically immersive & reflect on the narrative of her subjects by including artifacts & phrases within each piece. She is known for her distinctive mixture of “street art” & traditional oil technique.

The OGs: Grandma and Auntie

“The OG’s (Grandma & Aunti) Two of the strongest people I know. Society has tried to erase “us” so many times and continue to try to rewrite our black history and take away our respect as people. They stand next to each other wearing their Sunday's best and prepared for battle. My grandma staring at the viewer is almost intimidating and makes you question your own thoughts. Nothing gets past grandma. “One bullet cannot kill a movement” by Jesse Jackson when referring to the assasination of Dr. Martin Luther King. That quote is what this piece is about. The Movement, the fight to preserve our black history of Detroit.”
